U.S. athlete Ashton Eaton, seen here running the 100 meters, took gold in the decathlon today, completing all ten events and scoring 8,869 points — nearly 200 points ahead of American Trey Hardee, who took the silver. From the New York Times:
Minutes before Eaton sat down at his news conference, the sprinter Usain Bolt, fresh off his latest 200-meter triumph, said he deserved that title. Someone asked Eaton the same question. He pursed his lips. Trey Hardee, a fellow American decathlete and former world champion, answered for him.
“So Ashton doesn’t have to sound selfish or self-centered, Ashton is the best athlete on the planet, hands down,” Hardee said.
He cited the history of the decathlon, the way that title came about, how it was passed down over decades, from one decathlete to the next. Someone relayed Bolt’s answer. Hardee’s response came back quickly.
“Just because you’re fast doesn’t make you an athlete,” he said.
